Made a quick stop on our way to Amsterdam to peruse the famous hand-painted pottery factory in the small, yet surprisingly plentiful town of Delft.
They took us through the earthenware molding/drying/baking process, and then (more amazingly), the painting stages to create each completely unique design.
Each plate/vase/cup/ect starts with a charcoal stencil that the artist then follows carefully over with a special black in. They repeat the design with increasing levels of detail until they have a finished product with the black ink. Following this, they glaze the item, and during the firing process, the glaze reacts with the cobalt in the black ink and brings out that blue color they are known for.
Expect a ton of souvenirs to come home from here... you know, because us college guys are all so filthy rich, and each item so inexpensive.
